Dial-up and Modems
Dial-up: Uses POTS for data transfer, and gets its name because the connection is established by actually dialing a phone number
- data transfer is done through Modems - (Modulator Demodulator) which take data computers can understand and turn them into audible wavelengths that can be transmitted over POTS
Note: While POTS and PSTN are related, they are not entirely interchangeable. POTS refers specifically to the traditional analog voice communication service. PSTN refers to the global system of interconnected telephone networks, both analog and digital.
Baud rate: A measurement of how many bits could be passed across a phone line in a second
