BIOS and UEFI

Drivers - contain instructions that CPU needs to understand devices like keyboards and mouse

Basic Input Output Services (BIOS) - software that helps initialize hardware and gets operating system up and running

  • stored in Read Only Memory (ROM) chip on motherboard

Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) - performs same function of starting your computer as the BIOS, but more modern and has better compatibility and support for newer hardware

Power On Self Test (POST) - figures out what hardware is on computer before BIOS initializes any hardware or loads up essential drivers

CMOS Chip - stores basic data about booting computer like date, time, and how you want it to start up

Disk Image - copy of an operating system

Reimaging - wiping and reinstalling an operating system
